New Moon Solar Eclipse in Leo: Whose Voice Have You Been Using?

August 12th New Moon lands at 20°01' in Leo, and it's not an ordinary New Moon. It's a Solar Eclipse — the first half of this month's eclipse pair.

Eclipses arrive roughly every six months, always in twos, always along the same axis of signs. This time, it's Leo and Aquarius: the sign of the self and the sign of the collective.

A regular New Moon asks you to plant a seed. An eclipse doesn't wait for you to plant anything. It just clears the ground, whether or not you were finished with what was growing there.

Why Eclipse Season Feels Different

Eclipse season carries more charge than a typical lunar month, because the Sun and Moon are lining up with the Moon's nodes, the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path.

Astrologers have tracked this axis for thousands of years, precisely because it tends to mark real turning points. Not just moods.

Today's eclipse sits at exactly 20°01' Leo, and where that degree falls in your own birth chart determines how directly it touches you. If you know your chart, it's worth a look. Which house holds 20° Leo, and what — if anything — sits near it there, or in any sign around 20°.

If you don't have a chart handy, that's alright too. Leo season itself is enough of a nudge to notice where you've been playing smaller than you are. Leo rules self-expression, identity, the parts of you that are actually yours to lead with.

This eclipse is asking a pointed question: is the voice you're using actually yours, or is it one you inherited? From a family, a job, an old version of yourself that made sense at the time?

What I Found in My Own Chart

I pulled my own chart before writing this, because I wanted to give you something more specific than "eclipses are intense."

This one lands in my eleventh house, the house of community, the wider circle, the version of me that shows up in front of people rather than just to myself. And it's not landing quietly. It's squaring my natal Mars and Saturn in Scorpio, and opposing my natal Venus in Aquarius.

Translated out of the shorthand: that's old fear about being seen (Saturn), old anger about not being allowed to be seen (Mars), pulling directly against what I value and who I let myself love openly (Venus), while the door in question is marked your voice, in public.

If you've followed along with what I've shared this month (the corporate life I almost kept, why I actually do this work), that's not a coincidence. It's the same door, still opening.

A Threshold, Not a Verdict

The Druids marked days like this as thresholds. Not good or bad. Just significant. A door genuinely closing, and something new asking to be let through in its place.

The Druids didn't fear eclipses the way later traditions taught people to. They gathered for them. Something like this came through when I sat with what they'd want said today:

"We did not hide from the dark sun. We stood beneath it and let it show us what daylight had been kind enough to hide. You call this loss. We called it honesty. A door does not close to punish you, it closes because you are already standing in the next room, and some part of you has simply not turned around yet. Turn around."

A Simple Ritual for Today

Light a candle — gold or orange if you have it, echoing Leo's fire, but any color will work.

On a small piece of paper, write down one way you've been making yourself smaller than you are: quieter in a room, softer in an ask, careful with a truth.

Read it once, out loud if you're able.

Then let the candle burn all the way down, or safely burn the paper itself in a fireproof container outside and don't rewrite the sentence. Some things are only meant to be said once, to close the door properly.

If there's a version of your voice you've been keeping small, in a relationship, at work, in how you talk about what you actually want, this is a fair day to notice it.

What would you say, if you knew you only had to say it once?
